The text that changed our nights...

Hi friend,

I want to share something simple that has quietly changed our home.

For a long time, a friend kept telling me how praying with her husband before bed had changed their marriage. She mentioned it over and over. And honestly? I just let it slide past me every time.

Until one day she challenged me.

I knew myself well enough to know that if I didn’t act right then, I wouldn’t do it later. So standing there in front of her, I picked up my phone and texted my husband:

“Hey, could we start praying together at night?”

He replied within seconds (which is unusual because he rarely has his phone at work):
“Absolutely.”

And then immediately followed up with,
“I would love that!”

Well. At that point, I was committed. And accountable.

We’ve been doing it for about six weeks now.

Have we dropped the ball? Yes. Some nights our kids’ schedules interrupt things. Sometimes one of us gets in bed (and falls asleep) before the other. My husband travels. We try to circle back when that happens… but sometimes the ball just drops.

And yet, even imperfectly, it’s changed us.

The tension is less. As you know, opposites attract. We approach the day, the kids, and events very differently. I mean… differently. Praying together has made us softer toward each other’s hearts and perspectives. We still do life differently, but we feel more united in it.

It’s also made us more aware of each other’s vulnerabilities. When he prays, I hear the weight on his heart. When I pray, he hears mine. And that’s probably good for me... I tend to keep my heart tucked in and move through the day like a task manager instead of sharing what’s really going on inside.

Now you're challenged.

I’m sharing this in the hope that maybe you’ll pick up your phone and send a simple text:

“Hey, could we start praying together at night?”

Your spouse might respond with, “Yes, I would love that.”
Or they might respond with, “What’s up?” (slightly suspicious.)

If that happens, tell them a friend challenged you, and you’d love to try it together.

Let me know how it goes!

XO - Ashley

The other day I was telling a friend that I often find myself praying for the same kids...
